Agility Owner Role

An Agility Owner is a leader who is responsible for ensuring a team has a clearly defined agility approach and that it is consistently followed in day-to-day work. The role focuses on creating clarity, consistency, and alignment in how the team operates, ensuring that day-to-day efforts support broader goals rather than becoming routine activity.

Beyond guiding processes, the Agility Owner strengthens the conditions that enable teams to collaborate well, learn continuously, and adapt over time. They encourage reflection and improvement, helping teams translate experience into meaningful progress. A central part of the role is maintaining focus on outcomes and value. The Agility Owner also helps manage competing demands, protect team effectiveness, and address barriers that slow momentum.

By fostering shared understanding, resolving friction, and supporting growth in capability, the Agility Owner contributes to building a resilient team environment that can deliver sustainably and evolve as needs change.

How is it different from a Scrum Master? A strong Scrum Master often operates as an Agility Owner, but the Agility Owner role is broader than Scrum alone. While traditional Scrum Masters are commonly associated with implementing and supporting the Scrum framework, the Agility Owner represents a more holistic, framework-agnostic approach to building and sustaining team agility.
